Common names: Boarfish, Diamondfish. Minimum size: 45cm. Possession limit: 2. Possession limits apply everywhere, including the home. Longsnout boarfish are short deep-bodied fish characterised by 2-3 black diagonal bars across their silvery-white sides. Dorsal fins and pectoral fins are long and are black along the edge. Longsnout boarfish grow to over 50cm and 4.5kg in weight. There is little information on the life history of this species. They are commonly found around sheltered inshore reefs. It is suggested that they are territorial over small areas of reef and will confront divers who enter their territories. This behaviour makes them very susceptible to spearing and there has been concerns about stocks in some areas around Tasmania, consequently it is now prohibited to spear boarfish. Very rarely caught on a line, mainly due to their very small mouth, their diet consists of small invertebrates including crustaceans and marine worms. Boarfish are good eating with the flesh white, firm and tasty. The spines are venomous and care is needed removing fish entangled in a net or when cleaning this fish. Reaction to a spike may be from mild to severe. Treat by washing the wound with water as hot as bearable or with mild acid solutions such as vinegar.
