African Lungfish

The African Lungfish or Protopterus annectens is a fish that can literally survive for years without water! This fish has a special organs that are as close to lungs as any fish in the world. During the dry season the African Lungfish will burrow in the moist ground and then secrete a mucus that covers all of its body except its mouth. This serves as a cocoon of sorts. These African Lungfish will breath through their mouth until the dry season is over and then awakens from its state of hibernation. Native Africans have been known to find the African Lungfishes burrow and dig it up and store it for a meal at a later date! These fish are quite strange looking with an eel like appearance and skinny fins that look more like tentacles. These fish can grow to a maximum of 200 cm and are considered to be vicious predators. Although rarely kept in aquarium if you encounter one of these fish be careful and don't stick your hand in the tank as they will bite!

African Glass Catfish

Matt Clarke looks at the African glass catfish or Glass schilbeid Parailia pellucida. Scientific name: Parailia pellucida, Boulenger, 1901. Common name: Glass schilbid, African glass catfish Origin: Found over a very wide area of West Africa. Its range also extends as far north as the Senegal-Mauritania border on the west coast and as far east as Egypt and the Sudan, which means it's probably a common species in the wild. Size: Up to around 15cm/6", but normally a lot smaller in captivity. Diet: Gut content analyses have revealed that Parailia pellucida feeds on small planktonic invertebrates and bottom-dwelling crustaceans, so frozen Daphnia, Mysis, brineshrimp and bloodworm would probably be preferable. Water: Found over a wide area, so likely to be an adaptable species. Aim for something around neutral and you can't go far wrong.

Zune

The Zune, Microsoft's signature paperweight, hasn't seen a significant upgrade, or really anything in the way of marketing or promotion, in almost two years . . . No, really, they still make the Zune. I know, right? Microsoft bloodhound Mary Jo Foley writes at ZDNet about "Project Ventura," a music- and video-based service that seems to be exactly what Zune and the Zune Store is, but thankfully, not the Zune. Ventura, from what my tipsters tell me, is the name of a set of services being developed by Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices (E&D) unit. These services are focused on music and video discovery and consumption. Foley goes on to post a job ad from the Microsoft site seeking applicants for something called "Ventura Media Services" and listing details of a cryptic-sounding team of "music and video lovers."

Cowon D3

If you’ve ever wanted a device that totally looks like a phone, has a 3.7″ AMOLED screen, and runs Android, then the Cowon D3 Pleneu is the device for you. The recently announced Cowon D3 Pleneu is a PMP that plays your music even through Bluetooth, displays your photos and videos, external too with HDMI output, connects at hi-speed using WiFi, and can even tune in to TV stations with its built in T-DMB tuner. All that’s missing is wireless communications and it would be a phone. The device is running a heavily customized Android 2.1, so much so that you’d never know that Android was hiding underneath. No Google applications are provided, so there’s no access to the Android Market although Cowon is promising applications of its own.
